Bread (Comenity) is whacked.
Approximately 8 years ago in apparently a bit of temporary insanity set in and I opened a Sportman's Guide Visa.
To be fair I did use it for a 0% 5k BT that was paid in the 12 month period. Thereafter I used it every six months for a cup of coffee. Since it had no fee and a 19.5K CL why not keep it active.
Today went to the website just to check on it and saw a secure message which said as of September 24 the APR will be 35.99%.
Really don't care but out of curiosity I called to see why since I have Fico 8 scores of 841 to 850 on the 3 CRA's. The response was " because we can". Told the CSR to close it. He asked why and said it's the same answer you gave me. Good riddance.

I honestly don't understand why some take APR so personally.

Nothing personal however who needs it and they will cancel for non use plus the attitude was awful. Maybe the CSR has retention bonuses so why give the reward.

For many APR doesn't matter for those that get in a pinch APR certainly matters as life happens. I personally never carry a balance unless 0% but others aren't as fortunate and if you don't pay attention one might not know their rate is so high and charge up on said card. I know they should pay attention but a lot don't then default and/or bk happens, etc.

Good work. Thanks for not supporting predatory practices.
"Here is a 0% apr card for you, our best friend. After a year you will be charged our standard rate currently at 17.9%. Promo period ends - current standard rate has increased to 35.9%. However, because you are our friend, we are giving you a 30 day grace period at a discounted rate of 25.9%.
I find it curious that after having submitted an application for Medicare I started getting offers for 0% promo cards. Is it because they want to be my friend and are offering a helping hand? Think about it.

Is that an actual quote?
Comenity is on my "no way" list anyway, but that's worse than I even thought if that's a direct quote. If a CSR bluntly said that to me, I'd likely consider closing even if it wasn't on my mind when I called.

First the rep answered the phone with "hello". Thought I dialed wrong. The he just went off the robo system info and never verified me.
i asked about the secured message I received regarding the APR and he claimed there is record of it on his end. Proceeded to read it to him very politely asked for any possible reasons and he literally said because we can with sort of a chuckle.
I not the sensitive type but that was unprofessional and outright rude. I usually never cancel no fee cards however this was the exception.

Re: Bread (Comenity) is whacked.
If you don't need the card, sure close it (or, for me, let it close itself). For me, I like all my cards and if someone from citi or AOD or nusenda or Chase or Discover came and kicked me in the nards, I'd still keep the cards. I take nothing personally. I actually encourage high APRs and high fees because I view that is 'other people' supporting my rewards.

Re: Bread (Comenity) is whacked.
Some of us think ahead to a time when we may need to rely on our cards and carry balances. I carry some now but its at rates less than 10%. 35.99 is the max, federal usury laws set 36% as max rate.... Bread is greedy and I have nothing from them anymore.

Bread isn't the only one that's absurd. Wonder what the law says about penalty APR. I'm guessing it's 40% as shown below for a Type 3 (lowest tier) account with Synchrony. The kicker is that it says the penalty APR can remain in effect... indefinitely. Read your cardmember agreement folks. Some purchase APRs are already absurd, making a late payment can take someone into the realm of pure outrageousness.
